Maze of Binaries

This project is an attempt to acknowledge and embrace various gender identities; and to engage with the complex state of mind of individuals dealing with gender disorder. It is an attempt to indulge in their personal lives and question the complexities regarding identity, alienation and belongingness.

The photographs are made with an intention to bring out the humanistic perspective of their lives; to document emotions, moments and interactions. This project also aims to depict the various challenging journeys they have to undergo in order to be themselves.

Gender dysphoria is a medical condition accompanied with a sense of distress usually experienced when a person’s gender identity does not always correspond with the sex assigned at birth. Gender dysphoria usually at a primary level can cause certain secondary mental issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders or self-harming tendencies. It is usually known to be associated with transgender people irrespective of how they identify as within or outside the binary.

It is not a singular monolithic lived experience but a sense of distress which is differently experienced by each individual. It can be of different levels depending on how it is identified in a specific socio-cultural context. It is difficult to imagine how the society would look like if people stop associating gender with a certain body part, a certain role or on the basis of how a certain person should look like. Maybe the dysphoria would still prevail or maybe not.
